Informational Webinar: Health Care Fraud
The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) in coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will hold an Informational Webinar on Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at 1:00 pm, Eastern Time, to discuss the increasing trend of fraudulent health care activity occurring within the U.S. financial system.
Multiple investigations across the United States have revealed that this activity is being facilitated by passport holders with J-1 work and F-1 student visas1. Such passport holders have been recruited by individuals to obtain legitimate state-issued identification, incorporate business entities, and open business bank accounts to fraudulently bill Medicare. This same technique has been used to launder income tax checks fraudulently received through identity theft. Collective losses to the government are estimated to be in the hundreds-of-millions of dollars annually.
In this Webinar, the FBI will discuss the J-1 visa program and some specific concerns noted and typologies utilized by transnational organized crime organizations to use bank accounts to launder fraudulent proceeds from Medicare and the Department of Treasury. FinCEN and FBI officials will address trends and indicators of suspicious activity concerning this fraud, as well as the reporting requirements such as the filing of Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs).
This Webinar is intended for financial institution participation. Space is limited; participants from the same institution are asked to join the Webinar from a single location to support space availability.
